Ianto opened the door to his bedroom to find Brendan buttoning his jeans.
“Sorry,” he apologized, backing out of the doorway.
“No, it’s fine, come in,” Brendan said as he reached for his t-shirt.
“I’m sorry about all this,” Ianto said with a sigh. “Last night and then Jack…”
“It’s fine, Ianto really. It’s just… never mind.” Brendan shook his head and then pulled his shirt over it.
“What is it?” Ianto asked.
“It’s just… well, Jack… he’s the guy you’re sort of with, right?”
Ianto nodded, a worried look on his face. “Yeah, but no one else knows, so please–”
“I’m not going to say anything. I just… have you heard some of the things they say about him?”
“Yeah,” Ianto grinned.
“They’re not true, are they?”
Still smiling, Ianto said, “Some of them are, some of them aren’t, some I still don’t know. It’s kind of what makes Jack Jack.”
“I… you don’t worry about it then?” Brendan asked.
“Not really.” Ianto sat down on the bed. “Jack promised never to lie to me and that’s enough for me right now. He can’t tell me some things, but when he can’t, he just says so. It works for us.”
Brendan sat down beside him and took his hand. “I’m glad. I don’t want to spend the next three months worrying about you.”
Ianto chuckled. “You won’t even think about me until you get ordered to come back here again.”
“You really think that, don’t you?” Brendan asked wonderingly. When Ianto shrugged, Brendan said, “You’re wrong. And since Torchwood is so casual about kissing the boss, can I show you just how wrong?” Ianto turned in surprise to look at Brendan, who leaned forward. “Just once,” he murmured, “Sober? So I can remember?” He was very close now and Ianto stared into his green eyes, swaying forward as if hypnotized.
Their lips met softly at first, drawing a moan from each man. There was definitely a spark between them, maybe not as hot or as bright as the spark he shared with Jack, but something unique and special nonetheless. Ianto closed his eyes and brought his hand up to slide through Brendan’s damp curls. He opened his mouth and felt Brendan do the same, mirroring his motions perfectly. They moaned softly as the kiss deepened, Brendan’s tongue teasing a sensitive spot on the roof of his mouth that Ianto didn’t even know existed. Shivering, he felt Brendan’s arms encircle his waist, drawing him closer as the kiss became more passionate, more desperate. It was as if they both knew this was their one chance together.
Long moments later, and yet all too soon, they pulled back, each of them consciously slowing the kiss to just gentle touches of their lips, until they were ready to let go.
Brendan stood first, wavering slightly as he said in an uneven voice, “I’ll remember.” He gave Ianto a small smile and then left the room, quietly pulling the door shut behind him.
Ianto raised a shaking hand to his mouth. Brendan, he thought as he ran a finger over his lower lip. Shaking his head as if to erase the memory of the kiss, Ianto groaned, took two aspirin and a quick shower.
He threw on a suit and grabbed a tie from his closet, just looping it around his neck as he walked back out to the main room. Brendan was sitting on the couch next to a neatly folded pile of blankets.
“Ready?” he asked as Ianto stepped out of the bedroom.
“Yeah, Jack’s outside in my car so we don’t have to wait for a taxi. We can stop at the bakery on the way in, grab something more than a half-a-cup of coffee for breakfast. Sound okay?”
“Sure, I’m not much of a breakfast person anyway,” Brendan said as he walked with Ianto to the door.
Jack was sitting on the passenger side of Ianto’s Audi reading a brief. He looked up when the door opened and pointed at the ignition where Ianto’s keys were hanging. “I figured you’d want to drive,” he said dryly.
“Damn right,” Ianto replied, fastening his seatbelt. He met Brendan’s eyes in the rearview mirror. “Jack has difficulty finding third gear,” he explained.
Jack turned the page of his brief. “I know where it is, I just don’t see the point,” he said as he went back to reading. Ianto and Brendan shared a smile as Ianto put the car into gear.
The ride to the Hub was silent, other than Ianto taking requests at the bakery, and mercifully short. When they arrived, Jack got out immediately and headed for the Tourist Office door. Ianto and Brendan followed.
Ianto glanced at his watch. “If UNIT sent the part using first overnight then it might already be here,” he observed.
Sure enough, when he checked the package drop, there was a box inside addressed to Cpl B. Spenser, c/o Torchwood. He handed it to Brendan and then led the way inside.
“Coffee?” he asked as he tossed his coat and keys on the counter.
“Yeah, my head is killing me,” Brendan said with a rueful smile.
“Come on downstairs,” Ianto answered, leading the way to the open wall. “Jesus!” he exclaimed as Jack popped back out of the wall.
“Sorry, boys. Torchwood employees only past this point,” Jack stood in the wall, arms crossed.
“Be serious, Jack,” Ianto said as he moved to push past the Captain.
“I am serious, Ianto. No offense, Brendan, nothing personal,” Jack said with a smug sort of satisfaction which told Ianto that it was wholly personal.
“Fine,” Ianto said. “Brendan, have a seat in my office and I’ll bring you some coffee just as soon as I have it brewed.” He walked past Jack and headed for the service elevator.
Jack squeezed in just as the doors were closing. Ianto tied his tie and tried to keep quiet but he just couldn’t hold it in.
“What the hell was that, Jack?”
“What?” Jack asked innocently.
Ianto hit the stop button. As the elevator lurched to a halt, Ianto said, “I thought we we’re okay.”
“We are,” Jack said. “Doesn’t mean I have to like the kid or give UNIT an all-access pass to the Hub.”
Ianto rolled his eyes and pulled the button back out. He knew Jack was watching him as they descended and wondered if he could see Brendan’s kiss on him. He tried not to think about it, but that just brought it rushing back. He could feel the color start to flood his cheeks and wished that the elevator was faster. When the doors opened he hurried into the Hub, heading for the coffee maker. Jack followed at a more leisurely pace, waiting until Ianto had the coffee brewing before speaking again.
“How long do you think he’ll be?” Jack asked, turning his blue-striped mug over in his hands.
“I have no idea. He got a lot done yesterday and he seems much more competent than Phil, so I would guess not long.”
Jack nodded. Ianto motioned for his mug and Jack handed it over. He poured Jack the first cup of coffee and then passed the mug back to him. As Ianto filled two more mugs, Jack said, “Ianto, I… well… oh, never mind.” Jack turned and walked quickly back to his office before Ianto could stop him.
Sighing, Ianto took the two mugs upstairs and shared his breakfast with Brendan, trying not to feel guilty about Jack sitting alone in his office.
Brendan didn’t mention the kiss or reference anything from the night before. They were able to chat as easily as they had at dinner and when Brendan finally left to finish his work on the SUV, Ianto was sure that they could work together comfortably whenever necessary, spark or no spark.
He headed downstairs for a second cup of coffee and to see if the team needed anything. When he arrived, Tosh was in Jack’s office showing him a printout from the rift monitor. Ianto hovered in the door until Jack waved him in, still talking to Tosh.
“You’re right, something definitely came through. It was a small spike though, so I’m sure it’s nothing too major.” He passed his empty cup to Ianto with a smile, but something was off. Ianto smiled back and took the mug without comment, wondering why Jack was lying to Tosh about the spike. He poured Jack another cup of coffee and returned to catch the tail end of the conversation.
“…you think is best, Jack. I’m going to get back to that cube. I think I’ve almost deciphered the glyphs on the side.”
“Great, Tosh. Thanks for bringing this to me,” Jack said, waving the report. “I’ll swing by after a bit and see what we’ve got.”
“Sure.” Tosh smiled at Ianto as she passed him to leave the office. “Thanks for breakfast today, Ianto, and for remembering my muffin.”
“Of course,” Ianto replied with a smile. He closed the door after her and turned to Jack. “What’s wrong with that rift spike, Jack, and why wouldn’t you just tell Tosh?”
Jack regarded him for a moment. “Damn, you’re right.”
“About what?”
“You can always tell when I’m lying.”

Date: 2008-09-06 01:29 am (UTC)Glad you enjoyed it! More on the whole Flat Holm thing to come, lot's more actaully - it was like that damn bunny, the plot line just kept going and going... :D
Season 2 is a definite possibilty - as long as I don't burn out before then. I keep planning out little scenes and I'm like "NO! You must think about the next episode! Not one from Season 2!!" So I'd say there's a really good chance this fic may NEVER die. :D

Brendan is making me nervous, tho. As a stalwart Jack/Ianto shipper I suddenly have this urge to spring on him and claw his eyes out, even if he is a perfectly nice guy. Hmm... Must work to control those base and primal instincts of mine...unless he makes another move on Ianto, then he's toast.
