The world of mysteries and thrillers has lost one of its greatest.

31 October 1920 – 14 February 2010

If you've never read one of Mr. Francis's novels, you're missing out on a great ride. The NY Times has a lovely obituary here, saying all the things I wish I could about this great man and great author.

He will be missed.

Really? RIP, I quite enjoyed his books as a teenager

I was so shocked to see that! It's so easy to forget how old people are sometimes when they're immortalized on the book jackets. :(

He's written a huge amount and I devoured them like crazy. They were always an entertaining and exciting read.

That's it exactly - not great works of literature, just great reads. :)

*nods* He was seriously prolific. If you like mysteries at all, you should give him a try. *hugs*

I've read them all, I have them all (In English of course) except for the last two or three..have to get them while I am in the UK in may.
So, which one is your favourite? I loved "Shattered" and I very much like the character of Sid Halley....

Oh I adored Sid Halley too! I read them all years and years ago and started re-reading last year. I only got thru 1978. :D But of the ones fresh in my mind? I'd have to say my favorite was Odds Against, followed by Flying Finish. I like the flying ones like FF and Rat Race.

*sigh* Now I want to start reading him again. :(

Gosh I didn't realise he was so old. I suppose you see the picture on the dust cover and forget they were taken decades ago.

I love his stories. He has had many imitators but he will always be the best in that genre.

He will be sorely missed.

I know! I mean, if you look at his book list you know he's been doing this for a while, but I was just shocked. It's nice to know someone had a long full life, even if you'll miss them terribly.

:( You said it perfectly. He will be sorely missed.
