Vizzini's Rule: Chapter Eighty
When Ianto returned to the Hub, the sun was beginning to set and Brendan was on the road back to London. He was going to be late to his meeting, but he said he’d had too much fun to care. The two of them had spent the afternoon driving not one, but all of the proffered vehicles. After the test drive, Ianto had been forced to admit the BMW’s superiority over his beloved Audi, but he refused to make up his mind on the first day of looking no matter how much Brendan teased him. He hadn’t cared much for the Lexus or either of the Mercedes models, and the Volvo, while quite nice, did feel rather staid after the BMW and the Audi. But the Maserati, Ianto thought as he hung up his coat in the back office, now there’s a car…
He’d had Brendan drive all the cars as well, wanting his friend’s opinion about the handling and… whatever. I really need to learn something about cars, Ianto thought remembering Brendan’s frustration at having to translate all of his comments so Ianto could understand them. But he’d enjoyed driving the vehicles and sharing his vast knowledge. He’d been almost breathless with anticipation as he slid behind the wheel of the Maserati. Ianto chuckled a little bit remembering the look of sheer joy on Brendan’s face when they’d finally pulled into the dealership again.
Hoping Jack was still downstairs so he could thank him properly for the wonderful afternoon, Ianto headed to the Hub.
He found Jack in his office, going over some files. He smiled in greeting and walked purposefully towards Jack. He glanced over his shoulder as he walked behind the desk.
“Gave everyone the night off,” Jack said, correctly reading Ianto’s action.
Ianto took Jack’s face between his hands and leaned down to kiss him softly. “So we’re all alone?”
“Mmmhmm,” Jack hummed, tilting his chair back a bit and tightening his grip on Ianto’s arms. He pulled Ianto forward until he was straddling the chair and then nudged him down to sit on his lap, all the while kissing him with single-minded intensity. “Missed you,” he murmured into the kiss.
“Missed you too,” Ianto whispered. He threaded his hands through Jack’s thick hair and deepened the kiss. He moaned as Jack slid his arms around him, hugging him close. “And thank you.”
“For what?” Jack asked.
“For a fantastic afternoon.”
“You went to look at the cars, then?” Jack asked excitedly. “Did Elliot treat you right?”
“God, Jack. Treat me right? Who did you tell him I was? I felt like royalty.”
“Good,” Jack said. He loosened his arms so Ianto could lean back and see his face. “What did they have? What did you like? Tell me everything.”
“Well, they’d pulled seven cars and they were all pretty amazing. The Maserati was my favorite, but,” Ianto said, putting a finger over Jack’s mouth when he started to speak, “there is no way I’m getting an £80,000 car, I don’t care what you say.”
“Did you at least drive it?” Jack asked as he kissed Ianto’s finger.
“Yes, God, yes,” Ianto breathed. “Oh my God, Jack, I wish you’d been there. Brendan said that–”
“Brendan?” Jack asked.
“Yeah, he came with me. He loved the Maserati too. I think he’d be thrilled if I took you up on that whole money is no object nonsense just so he could drive it whenever he comes to town.”
“You took Brendan with you,” Jack said quietly.
“Well, he’s a mechanic and he knows a hell of a lot more about cars than I do. And you couldn’t come so I figured it would be more fun than going by myself. What?” he asked when Jack’s expression didn’t change.
“I wanted us to go together,” Jack said.
“I know that, and I appreciate all the trouble you went to for me, but you cancelled.”
Jack stood up, forcing Ianto to do the same. “I didn’t cancel, Ianto, something came up.”
Ianto was confused. “I know, the PM needed you. I’m not mad –”
“Oh, you’re not mad. Whew!” Jack said sarcastically.
“Hey! You told me to go without you, what does it matter if Brendan came with me or not?”
“It matters.”
Ianto stood in front of Jack with his hands on his hips. “Why?” he asked.
“Because… because it does, okay? This was supposed to be something for us, not you and that kid.”
“Jack,” Ianto said soothingly, “this was just the first look. I haven’t made a decision or even come close. We can go back and look again, or look somewhere else.”
“I knew I should have called UNIT,” Jack muttered.
Ianto rolled his eyes. “Jesus, Jack, just what is your problem with Brendan?”
“He wants you!” Jack yelled. “And you like him, more than you want to admit. And you…” All the fire seemed to fade from Jack. “You’d be so much better off with him instead of me,” he finished in a defeated voice.
“I thought we’d settled this back in October,” Ianto said. “I don’t want Brendan, not like that. I want you. If he has feelings for me or not, it’s immaterial. Or don’t you trust me?”
“It’s not that,” Jack said. “Of course I trust you, it’s just… I… you deserve someone like him, someone young and happy and open and… and better.”
“Better than what?” Ianto asked, stepping close to Jack and rubbing his hands up his lover’s arms.
“Better than me. I can buy you a Maserati but I can’t promise you anything.”
Ianto laughed quietly. “I don’t need a Maserati, Jack, and I don’t need any promises from you other than the one you already made.”
Jack still looked sulky. “What promise?”
“That you won’t ever lie to me,” Ianto said softly, stepping even closer so he could wrap his arms around Jack.
Jack snorted. “Yeah, that’s a great promise. ‘I can’t tell you anything about myself but I promise I’ll stop making shit up.’ Real nice.”
“Hey,” Ianto said. “It means a lot to me. And you’d be surprised how much I know about you now. You’ve opened up and let me in little by little. And it means the world to me. It’s why I lo– ” Ianto coughed. “Why I look forward to our nights together. Not for the sex –”
Jack raised an eyebrow.
“Okay,” Ianto admitted. “Not just for the sex. Our talks, your stories, knowing that there isn’t just death and violence out there, up there, but there’s more. There will be more, for centuries to come. You… as sappy as it sounds, you give me hope, Jack.”
Sighing, Jack allowed Ianto to pull him into his embrace, resting his head on Ianto’s shoulder. “Are you sure I can’t give you the Maserati too?” Jack asked forlornly.
Ianto chuckled. “Positive. You think I’m paranoid about the SUV? Owning a Maserati would have me in a padded cell in six months.”
Jack laughed and moved in Ianto’s arms to place a soft kiss on his lips. After a few moments the kiss went from comfort to craving, the four days (and five nights) they’d been apart suddenly fresh in their minds.
“So, you gave everyone the night off?” Ianto asked as he teased the curve of Jack’s ear with the tip of his tongue.
“Yeah,” Jack breathed. He had pulled Ianto’s dark blue shirt out of his waistband and was unbuttoning it from the bottom up.
“You hungry?”
“Oh yeah,” Jack almost moaned. He reached up to loosen Ianto’s tie, but Ianto stepped back.
“Not so fast. We have all night, right?” When Jack nodded, Ianto started to button his shirt again.
“Whoa! Wrong direction,” Jack complained.
“Why don’t I run and get us some dinner before we get started on anything… athletic? That way we won’t wake up at midnight, starving with only week-old left over Chinese take-away in the fridge.”
“How do you know it’s still in there?” Jack said, feigning insult. “One of us might have thrown it away while you were gone.”
Ianto gave Jack a pitying look. “That might have sounded convincing if you’d said one of you might have eaten it,” he said. “But throwing it away?”
Jack grinned. “Took it too far, huh? Oh alright, you make a good point. Especially since I skipped lunch. However, why don’t I go get us some dinner. Let me take care of you for once.”
“You take care of me all the time,” Ianto protested.
“So let me do it now,” Jack said, pulling Ianto back into his arms. “And don’t go away on any trips anytime soon, okay? It’s lonely here without you.”
Ianto kissed Jack gently. “Deal,” he whispered.

But what do you mean by "this chapter leads us straight into Combat" - the boys won't get their chance at 'taking care of each other'?

Date: 2008-11-01 09:13 am (UTC)I also loved Jack's spoken fears about his inadequacies/insecurities that he might not be good enough for Ianto, that Brendan might be somehow better for him. This confession actually caught me off guard because it seems so much more a Season 2 sort of thing to me but you are making this AU with OC's right?
:-)

Date: 2008-11-02 06:43 pm (UTC)Hmmm...the way I look at Jack's feelings of insecurity here are like this: He knows he's going to leave. He knows he's going to abandon Ianto at the first sign of the Doctor. He knows Ianto would be less likely to get hurt if he was with someone "normal" like Brendan. When Jack comes back in Season 2, he's back to stay. He's committed to life at Torchwood for the team's foreseeable future. So he'd be less likely to have feelings like he does in this chappie in Season 2. *shrugs* Not sure if that makes sense to anyone outside my head or not!
Love the comments that make me think! *hugs GW* Thanks hun!
