Old West Adventures
"Hey, Tommy. It's me," Adam said in greeting after Tommy answered his phone.
"Adam, hey! You home yet?"
"Yeah, just got in. What're you up to tonight?" Adam asked, tucking his phone between his shoulder and his ear as he got comfortable on the couch.
"Pizza, TV," Tommy said. "Nothing big. You going out?
"Nah, just hanging here tonight. You going to do one of your TV show marathons?"
"Not tonight. More in the mood for a movie but I haven't decided which one. I want something epic, an adventure, you know?"
"An adventure?" Adam asked with a soft laugh. "Like what?"
Tommy shrugged, his phone slipping. He swore and settled it again, leaning back into the corner of his own couch, unknowingly mirroring Adam's position across town. "I dunno. Maybe a western, that sounds good."
"Something with John Wayne?" Adam teased.
"And what's wrong with John Wayne?" Tommy demanded, ready to defend The Duke at any time.
"Nothing, nothing, it's just… sometimes you're just so…" Adam's voice trailed off.
Tommy grinned into the phone. He knew what Adam was going to say. "So what?" he prompted.
"So straight," Adam lamented with a huge sigh.
Tommy giggled.
"Okay, that was less straight," Adam said, making Tommy laugh again. "So what movie are you thinking about?"
"Not sure yet," Tommy said. "Maybe The Searchers or The Shootist… maybe True Grit."
"True Grit? Isn't that out in theaters now?" Adam asked in an innocent tone. "I could pick you up and we could go see it."
"Not funny," Tommy growled.
Adam chuckled. "Sorry, couldn't resist. You know, I don't think I've ever seen a whole John Wayne movie."
"What?!?" Tommy actually sat up on the couch and glared as if Adam was in the room. "How is that possible?"
With a shrug, Adam said, "Not my thing. I never watched many westerns growing up."
"But… they're awesome! In The Shootist, that was his last movie, he plays a gunfighter who's dying of cancer and instead of letting the cancer get him, he works it so he can go down fighting and take out a few scumbags with him. And The Searchers – he spends years looking for his niece who's been stolen by Comanches or Big Jake where his grandson is kidnapped and held for ransom." He could hear Adam laughing at him but kept talking. "Gunfights and brawls in saloons and all kinds of adventures. There's Rio Bravo and McClintock! and The Comancheros and Stagecoach and that's just a few of the best ones!"
"Okay, okay, I surrender. I'll watch a John Wayne movie. On one condition," Adam said.
Tommy smiled and settled back on the couch. "What's that?" he asked.
"You watch it with me."
"Duh," Tommy said. "Like I'd believe you really watched it unless I saw it myself."
They both laughed at that.
"So what are you gonna watch tonight, then?" Adam asked after a few moments of comfortable silence.
"I think True Grit. Gotta erase the stain of the remake from my brain. You don't remake The Duke, 'kay?"
"Got it," Adam replied. "You know, all this talk of cowboys… I'm totally imagining you dressed in chaps right now."
Tommy chuckled and got up to put the DVD in the player. He settled back on the couch and turned on the TV, setting the volume on low. "Yeah? With or without jeans on?" Tommy asked as he got comfortable again.
"With… for now," Adam purred. "I'm picturing you riding into town on a big white horse."
"So I'm the hero, huh?"
"Always."
"Sounds like the perfect start for an adventure," Tommy said with a grin.
