buttononthetop | Rambling: Help, Please!

Hello lovelies! I have a couple of questions/requests for opinions from my Torchwood readers:

So, here's my dilemma….

If I have a Torchwood/Doctor Who timeline that I've been working from since I started writing Vizzini's Rule, do you think I can stick with it even though changes have been made as new "canon" (episodes, books, comics, etc.) has come to light?

I used a combination of timelines when I started: one on Wikipedia and one on LJ; I like Option 2.

The big question is really The Sontaran Stratagem/The Poison Sky series in DW and how it meshes with TW. Does anyone know of any canonish info that covers what Torchwood was doing when The Doctor and UNIT were dealing the with Sontaran's? The timeline I work from originally listed The Sontaran Stratagem/The Poison Sky/The Doctor's Daughter happening around the time of Something Borrowed/From Out of the Rain (roughly February 2008). Obviously the sky didn't get scorched DURING Gwen's wedding, but it could have been shortly before or shortly after without messing anything up in Torchwood.

However, the timeline has been changed and updated due to new info – specifically, a DW novel called Beautiful Chaos which, according to the Wikipedia footnote, is "set on 15 May 2009, takes place "one month after the skies had burnt", The Stolen Earth and Journey's End are said to take place within six weeks of the events of the novel, meaning May–June" 2009.

So my question is this – will it grate on anyone if I use my original plan/timeline? I realize that it's my story and, as my roommate is always telling me, I can do whatever I want. :) But since my goal with the "Canon 'Verse" was to adhere to canon as closely as possible, I kinda wanted some input from y'all to see if you care. Technically, I only have to adhere to Torchwood Canon (according to the rules I just made up, hee), so ignoring Doctor Who Canon doesn't bother me as much. :)

Hmmm....I always figured that the Sontaran Stratagem/Poison Sky took place sometime after Tosh & Owen died. Mainly because in the DW episode, Turn Left, I thought Rose told Donna the names of the TW team - Jack Harkness, Gwen Cooper and Ianto Jones. I could be completely wrong about that, though LOL

Hmm... I'm not sure why a mention in Turn Left would affect when SS/PS took place since they were before TL. :) TL was DEFINITELY after Tosh and Owen died, no question.

But all that aside, would it make you go "huh?" if I put SS/PS where I want? Would it take away from enjoying the story?

The reason I mentioned the Turn Left episode is because it was while Donna was reliving the events in the alternate universe...so, technically, Rose was talking to Donna about the TW team while those events were happening - if that makes sense.

On the other hand, no, it wouldn't bother me at all where you choose to put it in your 'verse. Some things can take me right out of a story but that wouldn't be one of them. Just the thought of having more of this 'verse to read, even if you went completely off-track, killed Gwen and had Jack & Ianto get married instead of Gwen & Rhys, I'd still enjoy the hell out of it! *grins*

Hehehe...I have this really bad habit of re-watching the episodes and figuring out all the places that she should've died due to her own stupidy/stubborness. It's a fun little drinking game as long as you don't have to work the next day - that can be a might painful LOL

The best place to kill Gwen would be before she joined Torchwood.... but I guess it's a bit late for that. Always thought the Weevil should have got her instead of the poor janitor!

Just stick to Torchwood canon, the books aren't canon but the radioplays are, if that helps

The thing is, if you want to include Who canon you should also include Sarah Jane and that just gets too messy and confusing so I prefer to keep them all separated, if you really want to include the Sontaran ep, I think it's set after Exit Wounds, same reason as Bookwrm, they weren't mentioned in the alternate timeline, but it doesn't matter much to me either way

LOL, I'm really not following the Turn Left thing. If it was an alternate timeline then how would it matter to the "real" timeline? :) Too timeywimey for me tonight!

And, oh lord, I never watched SJA so I'd be completely lost if I took that into account! :D I think I'll stick with my "use the DW canon as I see fit" plan. As my roomie says - it's your story, do what you want! :D

It was an alternate timeline, but with the same events happening, just different results from the events, such as the team blowing up, which they obviously didn't in the real timeline.

I'm going to agree with what Thrace said, because she took the words right out of my mouth. It's your story and if you have to fudge things a bit to make it work then go for it. :) The DW/TW timelines are all too confusing anyway. And all that matters to me is that we're getting more of that verse! *bounces*

I don't think a slight diversion from an obscure timeline ( I didn't pay that much attention to timelines anyway)would make me un-like your stories.

I'm no good at figuring timelines out! My brain just automatically accepts whatever authors such as yourself say the timeline is, doesn't matter if it's different with different author's as long as it fits the story I'm reading! After all, it's not as if Torchwood actually has any set-in-stone canon, RTD keeps changing things so why can't we? I'm sure whatever you write will make more sense and have actual continuity!

I say fudge as needed and drop a note in at the beginning of the affected chapter saying you fudged neaner! It's your story and your verse, don't let it drive you nuts.

Oh... And I know for other screen fandoms only things that are filmed or recorded with the actual actors tend to be considered cannon because things like novelizations, while authorized by the original creators, are not usually written by them. With out the original gang most people say it don't count! Neaner :-)
